| Contextual Notes | Senator Henry M. Jackson spent a week in Antarctica in October 1959 as part of Operation Deep Freeze 60, which was a support program for U.S. scientific research efforts. The program was responsible for bringing in and dropping supplies to Byrd Station, Hallett Station, McMurdo Sound and South Pole Station, among other duties. Jackson visited McMurdo Sound, New Zealand's Scott Base, South Pole Station and other areas between stations. One of the highlights of Jackson's trip was flying with the crew of a C-124 Globemaster during the air drop of a nine-ton tractor to South Pole Station. |
