| Contextual Notes | Valery Panov and his wife, Galina Ragozina, were principal dancers of the Kirov Ballet in Russia. In 1972, they applied for a visa to emigrate to Israel but were rejected. Valery, who is Jewish, was dismissed from the ballet and denounced as a traitor, while Galina was demoted to the chorus. After two years of struggles and harrassment, and with pressure on the Soviet Union from the world arts community, the couple was allowed to emigrate to Israel.
