| Contextual Notes | In 1933, the U.S. Public Health Service opened a hospital at the north end of Beacon Hill. The 16-story, art deco tower at the crown of the hill was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The government closed the hospital in 1981 and turned the building over to private interests, which converted the building from a U.S. Public Health Service hospital to a private institution, Pacific Medical Center, in February 1983. In the late 1980s, Pacific Medical Center closed its hospital operations but continued to operate clinics and day-surgery units in the building. By 1998, the medical center was mired in debt. To counter financial problems, Pacific Medical Center negotiated a lease with Amazon.com, which moved its headquarters into the building.
