| Contextual Notes | The Alfalfa Club, which started in 1913, is a private organization known for its annual dinners and tongue-in-cheek political jokes. Members, of which there are always 150, wear Alfalfa Club medallions and annually nominate a United States "president" who gives a joke-laden speech at the dinner. Ronald Reagan is the only Alfalfa presidential nominee to become president of the United States. At the 69th annual dinner, on January 23, 1982, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger gave a speech as the club's outgoing president.
