Jackson of Washington State, Armed Forces Day speaker at Huntsville, Ala., poses in a large 'W' with 25 soldiers from Washington who are stationed at the Army's Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville. In the background is a full scale replica of Explorer I, the Free World's first scientific earth satellite, which was launched by the Army. Redstone Arsenal is the headquarters of the Army Ordnance Missile Command, which is responsible for the Army's rocket and space activities. On Friday, May 15, Sen. Jackson toured one of the Missile Command elements, the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, the organization which launched the Explorer satellites and the Pioneer III and IV space probes. Pioneer IV was the Free World's first satellite of the sun. (Identification of soldiers follows) |
