NotesTypewritten on verso: NATO Unclassified. 20 NOV 56. At an impressive ceremony held today (20 November 1956) at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe near Paris (France) General Alfred M. Gruenther, who is retiring from active military service, today turned over command to General Lauris Norstad, USAF, who has succeeded General Gruenther as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Among the members of the NATO Council, Marshal of France Alponse Juin and General Ely, Chairman of the Combined French Chiefs of Staff.
