NotesStamped on verso: The nuclear-powered submarines, U.S.S. Skate, SSM-573 and the U.S.S. Seadragon SSN-584 surfaced at the North Pole after a historic rendezvous under the Polar ice pack on the 22nd of August 1962. The submarines surfaced together at the North Pole, carried out anti-submarine warfare exercises, collected scientific information, and established a new year-round submarine channel by exploring the passage through the Kennedy and Robeson Channel between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. The U.S.S. Skate of the Atlantic Fleet departed New London, Conn. on July 2, 1962 and the U.S.S. Seadragon of the Pacific Fleet departed Pearl harbor, Hawaii on July 12, 1962.
