Franklin High School Band at Snoqualmie Pass, January 1938
Franklin High School Band at Snoqualmie Pass, January 1938
TitleFranklin High School Band at Snoqualmie Pass, January 1938
PhotographerUnknown
Date1938
CaptionVictor McClelland had a band program at Franklin High School, located in Seattle's Rainier Valley, that was the envy of schools throughout the region. In 1938 the band was invited to perform at Snoqualmie Pass for the inaugural run of the Ski Train to the new Snoqualmie Ski Bowl near Hyak at the east entrance to the Milwaukee Railroad Cascade Tunnel. Performing on skis resulted in spills and dents and in one instance the bass drum arriving at the bottom of the hill before the band. The band gained national publicity for their part in the inaugural trip on the first regularly scheduled ski train in the country. The event was covered by Universal Newsreel and was showing at the Music Box Theatre in Seattle as well as across the nation. During World War II, the band often performed in parades and sites throughout the area promoting the sale of war bonds to help the war effort. One of their most popular performing sites was Victory Square, between 4th and 5th Avenues by the Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle, where visiting celebrities would join the effort to sell war bonds to the thousands of spectators that came to see them.
