| Title | Rainier District Powwow Sockeye Salmon Derby, Seattle, ca. 1973 |
| Photographer | Unknown |
| Date | ca. 1973 |
| Caption | The Rainier District Powwow was first held in 1934 and continued through 1990. It attracted thousands of people to Seward Park for races, beauty contests, and games. One of the most popular events was the annual Sockeye Salmon Derby that was coordinated with the annual sockeye run in the Lake. That run of sockeye came into the lake through the locks and the ship canal, then through Lake Union, the Montlake Cut, and into Lake Washington. The run then made its way south, past Seward Park and into the Cedar River at Renton. The "check in and weigh in" dock shown here is at the southern end of the Seward Park Peninsula. The winning fish weighed in at 9 1/2 pounds. The sockeye still show up every year, creating a bonanza for fishermen. |
