Northwest Heavyweight Champion 1967-1975. No one beat him from the Northwest for 11-12 years.
#7 World Heavyweight contender in 1968 and 1973, weight 214 pounds.
Turned professional in 1966. Retired in 1978.
Every professional fight was a main event fight. 42 fights, 36 wins, 25 by knockout.
Fought George Foreman, Ken Norton, and beat ex-champ Jimmy Ellis.
Sparred with Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier.
During his career he met Rocky Graciano, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Gene Fullmer, Barny Ross, Henry Armstrong.
He would work out at the Maplewood Golf Course.

He owned the Melrose Tavern from 1972-1976.
His great-grandfather Matt Oehm came to the Pacific Northwest in 1887 working in the mines at Franklin and Black Diamond, moving to Renton in 1904. Their home was at 431 Wells Ave. S., Renton. (Was a supervisor in the mines.)
Boone's mother Margarite Smith Kirkman is a descendant of the founders of Smith Brother's Dairy. She lives in the original family home and is the keeper of her son's boxing momentos.
Boone's name is Dan Kirkman and was nicknamed 'Boone' by his father because as a youngster, while hunting, Dan would be a slow-poke, and his father would say, 'come on Daniel Boone.' |
