| Caption | Using new techniques, the hard-of-hearing section of the University of Washington speech clinic began training three deaf children how to talk. Instructors speak into an amplification device placed against the patient's ear to convey that sound exists and has meaning. Graduate student Lucille Engdahl also showed the children how to shape their mouths and by touching their throats how to emit different sounds. Where previously such children had only been taught sign language, these children were to also learn to lip-read and speak well enough to get along with other children their age. |
