| Caption | In 1886, the private Seattle Electric Light Company installed the first Edison electrical system west of the Mississippi. Soon, a number of independent electric companies supplied power to local city residents and businesses. Many of these were later consolidated into the Seattle Electric Company. The city-owned Seattle City Light started in 1902.
