| Caption | Known as the first shopping mall in the United States Northgate Mall was an instant success upon opening in April 1950. The initial 80 store capacity increased by 25 stores when Interstate 5 opened on the mall's west boundary. By 1974 the mall was completely enclosed offering a climate-controlled environment. |
