| Caption | Harry Bridges, Pacific Coast leader of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (C.I.O.) Longshoremen's Union, flew in from San Francisco to attend an emergency mass meeting. C.I.O. members voted to 'give no recognition, support nor sympathy' to the American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) Longshoremen's Union strike. The A.F. of L. stopped work at Tacoma, Port Angeles, and Anacortes nearly a week earlier in protest of 1938 National Labor Relations Board decision giving the C.I.O. union collective bargaining rights for the entire Pacific Coast. The C.I.O. wouldn't support the strike, claiming it was against the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union and not against their employers. |
