Date1959
CaptionTwo robbers forced their way into the White Center State Liquor Store after closing time on Saturday night, April 4, 1959. Three store employees were forced to lie on the floor behind the counter while the chief clerk of the store, Gino Giuntoli, stalled for time while opening the safe at gunpoint. King County deputies Jack Triplett and Jim Foley and reserve deputies M. A. Christopherson and William Hayden arrived on the scene while the robbery was in progress. Christopherson and Triplett entered the rear of the store and fired at the robbers in front of the store counter. One of Triplett's bullets fatally wounded Michael L. Mooney, 48. After a shootout on the sidewalk with the other two officers, the second robber fled the scene with $2, 000 of the $6, 000 taken from the safe. Mooney's body was covering a cardboard box containing $4, 000 of the loot.

In this image, the body of liquor store bandit Michael L. Mooney is carried on a stretcher from White Center State Liquor Store at 10034 16th Ave. SW by King County Coroner Leo Sowers (foreground, in jacket) and his deputies. Note the plate glass window at left, riddled with bullet holes.
