| Caption | In 1853, Diana and Henry Tobin homesteaded in the Black River area, now Renton. After Henry died in 1857, she married Erasmus Smithers, another early settler in the area. Diana Smithers protested the removal of local Native Americans to reservations in the 1870s and allowed many to remain on her land. This photo of Diana Smithers was probably taken in the 1880s. |
