CaptionDirt from the Second Denny Regrade was loaded into self-dumping barges which were towed out into the bay. Each barge had air compartments in its hull. When water was let into the compartments on one side, the barge tipped and dumped its load of dirt into the water.
This photo, taken around 1930, shows a self-dumping barge tipping its load of Denny Hill earth and rock into Elliott Bay.
