Women's crew at the University of Washington, January 26, 1929
Women's crew at the University of Washington, January 26, 1929
TitleWomen's crew at the University of Washington, January 26, 1929
PhotographerWebster & Stevens
Date1929
CaptionWomen's crew started at the University of Washington in 1906. The women rowed on stationary seats in the boathouse before being trusted on the water in training barges. By 1908, teams from each class competed regularly in racing shells on Union Bay.
This photo, taken in January 1929 shows the women's crew posing with oars as a coach gives them directions. The women would have worn athletic clothing for actual races. Curiously, there is no mention of womens' crew in the 1929 university yearbook. Perhaps this is one of Webster & Stevens advertising photos.
