Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1943
CaptionThe Pacific Car and Foundry Company got its start in Seattle in the early 1900s building railroad cars for the logging industry. The company expanded quickly and, in 1905, bought land in Renton for a new plant. Now known as PACCAR, the company has factories in five countries, making heavy-duty trucks and other vehicles, railcars, and mining equipment.

This 1943 photo shows a group of women assembling a Sherman tank at the Pacific Car and Foundry factory. During World War II, the company manufactured products needed by the military. Like Boeing, Pacific Car and Foundry employed many women in traditionally male jobs in order to keep up with war-related production.
