| Caption | Born into a samurai family in 1848, Heihachiro "peaceful son" Togo received naval training at the Thames Nautical Training College in London and went on to become Japan's greatest admiral. His military fame came from defeating the Russians in the most decisive sea battle in history, the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. His visit to Seattle, shown here, may have been on his journey home after attending the coronation of England's King George V. |
