| Caption | In 1937, due to an increase in the number of drivers and the demand for safer roads, the state legislature enacted a highway code. Among the measures was a periodic safety inspection of vehicles, with violators being fined or arrested. In this photo, automobiles line up to be inspected at the State of Washington Department of Highway Safety Station. On the left, the Official Headlight Adjusting Station can be seen. |
