PhotographerStaff Photographer
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1946
CaptionRoyal Brougham, who spent 68 years at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as a sports writer and editor, commented upon his retirement that, "It has been a vacation with pay." Possessing ability in promoting as well as writing, he successfully raised funds for many causes associated with sports, children, and wartime causes. Portus Baxter, the former Seattle P-I editor, originally hired Brougham as a copy boy. Brougham kept Baxter on staff, at a wage of $5 a week, at the Seattle P-I after Baxter formally retired. In appreciation, Baxter left his estate of $300, 000 to Brougham who used most of it to establish a charitable foundation for children and young people. A devout Baptist, Brougham taught Sunday-school classes for forty years but, however, was tolerant of a wide variety of people. Accumulating numerous honors and accolades throughout the years, the Royal Brougham Pavilion at Seattle University and Royal Brougham Way, the street between Safeco Field and Seahawks Stadium, were both named after him.
