| Caption | Kirkland, Washington's 1947 Water Carnival included the second annual swimming pig race. Some 5, 000 people jammed the waterfront to watch the contest, billed by festival staff members as "the Kentucky Derby of Seagoing Porkers." The winning pig swam the first 100 feet in 29 seconds flat. Swimming pig races were particularly popular during the early years of the festival. In this August 2, 1947 photo, taken at the Kirkland Water Carnival, three swimming pigs slide down their chutes to start the race. The Water Carnival was part of the city's Summer Festival. |
