CaptionMany of the Makah women who lived at Neah Bay, on the Olympic Peninsula, were known for their excellent basketry. They prepared grass and roots to make a variety of baskets and mats for daily use. Some of their tightly twined baskets were watertight.
This photo shows a Makah basketmaker on the beach at Neah Bay. Strips of materials and a finished basket sit nearby. The photo was taken by James G. McCurdy sometime between 1900 and 1910. McCurdy spent part of his boyhood on the Makah Reservation on Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
