| Title | Kilns of Northern Clay Co., Auburn, Washington, ca. 1910s |
| Photographer | A.D. Co. |
| Date | ca. 1910s |
| Caption | Starting in the 1890s, several industries began to take advantage of the clay deposits in and around Auburn, Washington. In a 1913-1914 directory, Auburn's Northern Clay Company advertised itself as the largest producer of architectural terra cotta products west of Chicago. Molded terra cotta, in a variety of colors, glazes and finishes, was a prominent feature of window moldings, cornices and trims on buildings throughout the nation. This photographic postcard, made sometime in the 1910s, shows the Northern Clay Company's plant in Auburn, Washington. The kilns, where workers baked the clay products, are the round buildings with smokestacks. |
| Notes | Written on verso: Message: Arrived ok. George will depart for the east in a few weeks. Left things in good shape here. Think I will like the job & town here. Nice people. Am starting some [clay] body tests in a new electric furnace & which will be interesting as these Western clays are nothing like what I know about. Lot of roses and girls here too. George was in his glory.
