| Title | Mules hauling railroad ties by sledge, ca. 1910s |
| Photographer | Waters, V.S. |
| Date | ca. 1910s |
| Caption | During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, workers built many miles of logging and mining railroads as well as long-distance and intercity railroads. All of these routes required wooden ties to support the tracks. With its seemingly endless supply of huge trees, western Washington state was an ideal source of wood for railroad ties. This photographic postcard, probably made in the 1910s, shows a mule team harnessed to a load of railroad ties at an unidentified location in western Washington. The loggers rested on their axes while photographer V.S. Waters took the photograph. |
