1940s kitchen, 1948
Title1940s kitchen, 1948
PhotographerWebster & Stevens
Date1948
CaptionThe look of kitchens has changed over the years. In the 1940s, sinks and appliances usually stood separately, like furniture. By the 1990s, people favored a built-in look, with sinks, stoves, and other appliances set into continuous counters.
This photo shows one wall of a Seattle kitchen in 1948. In this kitchen, dishes were washed by hand in a dishpan and placed in a dish drainer on one of the sink's broad drainboards. In the photo, the dishpan and dish drainer hang conveniently under the sink. The kitchen has an electric stove. A coffeepot and a grease jar sit on the small table.
