TitleThe International Fountain and Washington State Coliseum at night, Seattle World's Fair, 1962
PhotographerKloostra, Erven
Date1962
CaptionThe International Fountain was the product of an international competition won by two Tokyo architects. It was originally designed with a basin of irregularly shaped rocks to suggest the terrain of unexplored galaxies, and included colored lights. The fountain was completely replaced and expanded in a $6.5 million project in 1995, the sharp-edged rock replaced with a bowl and the iron nozzles with a smooth silver dome.

The Washington State Coliseum was designed by architect Paul Thiry and built for a cost of $4.5 million. In the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid, it has no interior roof supports. The aluminum paneled roof is supported by steel compression trusses and nearly six miles of steel tension cables. The Coliseum was remodeled in 1995, adding 3, 000 new seats, and was renamed KeyArena.
