| Title | Construction of the International Fountain for the Seattle World's Fair, 1961. |
| Photographer | Vallentyne, John Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1961 |
| Caption | The science-themed Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World's Fair) opened on April 21, 1962. Visitors to the Fair could ride the Monorail, take the elevator to the top of the Space Needle, and see the exhibits in five themed areas: The World of Science, The World of Tomorrow, The World of Commerce & Industry, The World of Art, and The World of Entertainment. Nearly 10 million people visited the Fair before it closed on October 21, 1962. This photo shows the construction of the enormous International Fountain, which was originally designed with a basin of irregularly shaped rocks to suggest the terrain of unexplored galaxies. The fountain was completely replaced and expanded in a $6.5 million project in 1995, the sharp-edged rock replaced with a bowl and the iron nozzles with a smooth silver dome. |
