CaptionIn the mid 1920s, Puyallup Valley farmers began planting daffodils as bulb crops to replace the dying hops industry. In the spring of 1926, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Orton of Sumner, Washington, opened their home for a garden party so their guests could admire the daffodils in bloom around their estate. Each spring, interest in the daffodil fields grew, eventually causing gridlock in the towns of Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. Eventually it was suggested that the blooms, which were discarded or used as fertilizer, be used instead as decoration for a parade. The idea was embraced, and the Grand Floral Street Parade, or Daffodil Festival Parade, was born. Traveling through the Pierce County towns of Puyallup, Orting, Sumner and Tacoma, there has been a parade every year since 1934, with the exception of the war years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.
