| Caption | The first annual Silver Skis race was held April 22, 1934 on the high snowy slopes of Mt. Rainier. The race started at 10, 000 feet on Muir Glacier and sixty or so men left the starting line together, spaced 10 to 20 feet apart. The most notable features of the route were mounds that caused the skiers to become airborne for 100 or more feet.
This photo shows racers Hans-Otto Giese (left), Don Fraser (center), and Alf Moystad (right). Fraser won the 1934 Silver Skis race, Giese came in sixth, and Moystad was third. The race was sponsored by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. |
