CaptionBacked by a civic group called the Seattle Washingtonians, pilot Russell Owen attempted to fly his SF-2 "everyman" aircraft, equipped with a Plymouth automobile engine, non-stop from Anchorage to Seattle in the summer of 1936. The stunt was in an effort to draw attention to the fact that Alaska had no air mail service. Fog forced Owen to return to Anchorage after just 5 hours, however, where he was promptly grounded by the Bureau of Air Commerce for not having the proper licenses. A second attempt in September of 1936 resulted in a crash landing in Juneau.
