CaptionOn May 14, 1954, Boeing unveiled the Model 367-80. Sometimes referred to as the "Dash 80, " the plane is the prototype for Boeing's legendary 707. A crowd of more than 8, 000 watched as Bertha Boeing, founder William Boeing's wife, christened the lemon-yellow and copper-brown aircraft with a bottle of champagne. The Dash 80 had a wing span of 130 feet and was 128 feet long. Four engines produced 10, 000 pounds of thrust, enabling a cruising speed of 550 mph. Among its passenger comforts were cantilevered seats and folding armrests.
