| Caption | Eddie Peabody (1902-1970), also known as "King of the Banjo, " was perhaps the most famous plectrum (four string) banjo player ever, his career spanning five decades. Peabody served in the Navy during World War I, after which he began his show business career, starting in vaudeville. With the rank of Commander, Peabody also served as a morale officer during World War II, playing shows for servicemen. After the war, Peabody revived his performing career, while still performing for hospitalized servicemen after the war. Eddie Peabody is depicted here in his military uniform, performing for patients at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerton after the war, accompanied on piano by Seattle musician and performer Art Barduhn (b. 1922). |
