TitleMen at picking table at Cannon Mine bunkers, Franklin, ca. 1915.
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1915
CaptionA picking table was an area where the newly mined coal and slag would pass over a moving or vibrating table. Miners would separate the shiny, lighter coal from the heavier shale and rock. Jobs on the picking table were often given to new and inexperienced help, or older laborers who could no longer handle the grueling underground mining work.
The town of Franklin was located on the hillside above the Green River Gorge about two miles east of Black Diamond.
