CaptionThis photo shows the surface facilities for Pacific Coast Company's power house and bunkers at Mine No. 11, previously known as the Morgan Slope. Mines were often named for the section of land where they were located. Since this mine was in Section 11, Township 21 North, Range 6 East, it was called Mine No. 11. Around 1915, Mine No. 11 was reputed to be the deepest underground coal mine in the United States. It operated from 1896 to 1927 producing nearly seven million tons of clean coal, making it the largest producing mine in Black Diamond's long coal mining history.
