CaptionAt 3:00 pm sharp on February 23, 1947, the Great Northern Railway's fast new Empire Builder pulled out of Seattle's King Street Station on its inaugural run to Chicago. City and railroad company officials broke bottles of water from Puget Sound and the Mississippi River over the engine. Then Flag Brakeman Robert A. Childers gave the signal to Engineer A.B. Gairns to open the throttle and start the trip.

This photo, taken February 23, 1947, shows Brakeman Childers standing near the rear of the Empire Builder as he signals the train's engineer in the cab of the locomotive.

The Great Northern Railway is sometimes referred to as the Great Northern Railroad.
