TitleGroup standing by large cedar stump, Tolt, ca. 1905
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1905
CaptionBy the first decade of the 20th century, when this photographic postcard was probably made, the gigantic trees seen by western Washington state's early settlers were just memories. The stumps which remained were curiosities -- something to marvel at and then pose by for a photograph.

On this photographic postcard, a group of people gather by a huge cedar stump at the C.M. Templeton Ranch in Tolt (Carnation), Washington. According to the writing in the image, the stump was 17 feet in diameter.
NotesTolt became known as Carnation by an act of the Washington State Legislature in 1917.

Caption on image: Cedar stump 17 feet diam. Tolt, Wash. C.M. Templeton Ranch.

Handwritten on verso: Harry Head.
