CaptionMarcella Delfel was one firewoman among 581 firemen in the Seattle fire department. She was the first woman ever to join in the history of the department, even back to its volunteer days. She went to work as a clerk in the chief's office due to the shortage of male clerks who were being called into the armed forces.

In this image, she tries on a fireman's coat and hat and makes her acquaintance with the old pumper Sacramento, in service in volunteer days from 1876-1889.
