CaptionIn 1963, guided by Sherpa Nowang Gombu, Jim Whittaker became the first American to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. The first Everest team returned to the United States to much acclaim and was presented with an award at the White House by President Kennedy. In this photo, Whittaker and Gombu embrace during a reunion at Whittaker's home.
