| Caption | Three Seattle postal clerks, Gunnar Sundin (left), D.S. Vaughn (center) and Jim Dyar, translate their joy into action after hearing that President Eisenhower signed a law approving an 8.1% pay increase for postal workers. The raise had been a long time coming and, though many postal workers had hoped for more, all were happy to receive it.
The bill was signed on Friday June 10, 1955. The estimated annual cost of the pay raise for the nation's 500, 000 postal workers was $156, 000. The increase covers a 6% general increase for all workers with other increases made through reclassification. The president had previously vetoed a bill asking for an 8.8% increase. For one substitute clerk with less than a year's experience the increase would raise his pay from $1.61-1/2 per hour to $1.81-1/2 per hour. For Gunnar Sundin, a pouch rack clerk, and Jim Dyar, a clerk, the increase would amount to more $300 per year. |
