| Caption | The purpose of the Washington State cultural survey was to determine what types of cultural activities the state's residents participated in and what additional services they needed, such as crafts, hobbies, music, painting, literature, theater, festivals, and community celebrations. The survey director, Burton W. James, was also the head of Seattle's Repertory Playhouse.
