CaptionThe purpose of the Washington State cultural survey was to determine what types of cultural activities the state's residents participated in and what additional services they needed, such as crafts, hobbies, music, painting, literature, theater, festivals, and community celebrations. The survey director, Burton W. James, was also the head of Seattle's Repertory Playhouse.

Field workers shown in this photo are: Mrs. Marjorie Robinson, Mrs. Marjorie Lawrence (daughter of James), Imogene Beall, and John F. Kinzel.
