| Caption | Nearly 200 firemen and dozens of sailors and shipyard workers battled a four-alarm fire at the Todd Shipyard on Harbor Island. A small fire began at the end of Pier 7 and quickly spread to an adjoining drydock, where the U.S. Navy destroyer Marshall was docked for an overhaul. The spectacular blaze also endangered another Navy vessel and the Washington State Ferry Kalakala, both undergoing work at the yard. Although the fire lasted for over four hours, the Marshall sustained little damage, and no one was critically injured.
In this image, firefighters and shipyard workers fight the fire that erupted on Pier 7. The men at left train hoses on flames from Drydock No. 1, while the men at lower right are cutting a hole in the dock to help firefighters access flames. |
