World's flight plane on Lake Washington, Seattle, 1924
World's flight plane on Lake Washington, Seattle, 1924
TitleWorld's flight plane on Lake Washington, Seattle, 1924
PhotographerWebster & Stevens
Date1924
CaptionIn 1924, United States army pilots became the first to fly around the world. This wasn't easy: at that time, planes were fragile and carried only a small amount of fuel. The men flew from Seattle north to Alaska in four Douglas-built, single-engine, two-seater biplanes and returned to the city 176 days later.

This photo shows one of the planes equipped with pontoons, which were necessary for water landings and take-offs during the first leg of the expedition.
NotesHandwritten on sleeve: Worlds Flight Plane on Pontoons.

Caption by MOHAI staff.
