CaptionIn the early 1900s, teenager Carl Phare got a job as a ride operator at a Kansas City amusement park. By 1917, he had moved to Portland, Oregon, and begun designing and building roller coasters throughout the western United States. From 1930 to 1960, Phare owned and operated Playland Amusement Park at Bitter Lake, north of Seattle. Playland's roller coaster, called the Dipper, was one of the most popular rides in the park. On Saturday, June 8, 1940, the members of Seattle's Junior Safety Patrol enjoyed their 12th annual outing at Playland. Some 2, 400 boys and girls from every elementary, middle, and high school in the city visited the Mystery House, rode the Dipper and Dodgem cars and tried their luck at the shooting gallery. Although the park opened at 10:00 in the morning, some excited children arrived as early as 6:00 a.m.
In this 1940 photo, taken at Playland Amusement Park, a carload of boys plunges downhill on the Dipper. For much of the 20th century, roller coasters were built primarily of wood.
