Note from EHC records: Isabel Bechtel took over as postmistress after the death of her husband in 1890. May Johnson, was 41 years old when she worked for the Bellevue Post Office from 1895-1896. Riding two times a week to the Houghton Post Office where all eastside mail came by boat. She received $50.00 a year for her efforts. She carried a can of pepper to protect herself from man or beast (never used it). The photo was taken near what is now the intersection of NE 8th and 100th NE. Behind the fence would be present Bellevue Village. Bellevue Square is now located across the street from that location. The white house is the J B Warren home.
This photo was part of a grant project to collect historical photographs from the local area. Photos were copied by the museum and returned to the donors. |
