| Contextual Notes | Simla stretches for about two miles along a narrow, east-west ridge in the foothills of the Himalaya. The hot-weather home of the Government of India from 1865 until independence, Simla stands on land acquired by the British government as a sanatorium in 1816. It still attracts Indian visitors seeking to escape some of the heat of summer. Kipling mocked the place, viceroys and vicereines hated it, but here the British rulers of India spent most of their imperial century. At the western end of the town stands the former viceregal lodge. It was first occupied in 1888, by Lord and Lady Dufferin. Rain on one side of the building flows to the Bay of Bengal through the Ganges, while rain on the other side flows to the Arabian Sea, through the Indus. The lower wing was added in 1913 to house the Council of State. Today, the building serves as the home of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies.
