Contextual NotesOn September 1, 1923 the quake known as the Great Kanto Earthquake hit Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan. Over 150, 000 people were killed or were listed as missing and it devastated much of the industrial and business sections of Tokyo and the surrounding areas.
