Janeiro
which
was
opened
in
1750
to
transport
the
waters
of the
Rio
Carioca
from the
mountains.
When
the
city
was
given
a
modern
water
supply
in
1896
, the
career
of the
Arcos
da
Lapa
aqueduct
came
to an
end.
