| Historical Background | The International Telephone and Telegraph Company, or ITT, was founded in 1920. ITT subsidiary the Lorenz Company was involved in the manufacture of some of the most successful German Luftwaffe fighter aircraft used during the World War II. The company also played a significant role in the U.S.-backed coup to overthrow Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973. Between 1959 and 1978, ITT became an increasingly aggressive conglomerate and underwent a second period of rapid expansion, acquiring 275 other companies, including Wonder Bread maker Continental Baking, and increasing its annual sales nearly 20-fold. The United Farm Workers and their supporters vigorously protested the company throughout 1974. |
